The Greater Neighborhood Project is a dynamic collaboration linking Kentuckiana’s most innovative neighborhood civic leaders, government representatives and community development specialists with regional and national consultant/trainers.
Through a series of highly tailored educational workshops and site visits, the project was particularly active during a 15-month period between October 2006 and September 2007 when New Directions Housing Corporation convened the nation’s first place-based delivery of an entire NeighborWorks® America professional training curriculum, the Community and Neighborhood Revitalization Certification Program.
Topics that attracted grassroots and local public leaders included: negotiation and collaborative skill building, community planning and consensus building, real estate development redesigned to enhance market appreciation and investor choice, neighborhood image development and civic organization. Participants learned to plan and execute projects, then measure results and performance. Consultative trainers were active professionals currently engaged in cutting-edge community development initiatives across the United States recruited from NeighborWorks America Training Institute, specifically the Community & Neighborhood Revitalization Professional Certification faculty.
New Directions Housing Corporation, as one of Louisville's NeighborWorks network members, served as a convener. In addition, collaborative partners from The Federal Reserve Bank of Saint Louis, Louisville Branch, Study Circles Resource Center and Fannie Mae Foundation Dataplace/Knowledgeplex Project synchronized additional enrichment activities that were designed to impact groups including and beyond key participants. At the project’s conclusion, neighborhood participants used their final projects as “starter” information to representatives from national, regional and local foundations and potential business partners. New funders and allies have been secured to help propel resident driven strategies.
